Starting out in digital marketing, it’s easy to feel you need expensive software before you can do anything. You don’t. Many of the most useful tools are free, and they’re enough to run real campaigns, track results, and grow a business online.
Here are the free tools I recommend to every beginner, grouped by what they help you do.
1. Find out what people are searching for
Google Trends Shows how interest in a topic changes over time and across regions. It’s useful for planning content around seasons and festivals. You can even compare search interest in Kerala against other states.
Google Keyword Planner Free with a Google Ads account (you don’t have to run ads). It shows what people search for and roughly how often, so you can choose topics and keywords with real demand.
Google Search suggestions Start typing a topic into Google and see what it auto-completes. The “People also ask” box and “Related searches” at the bottom of the page are free keyword research.
2. Get found on Google
Google Business Profile For any local business, this is the first thing to set up. It controls how you appear on Google Maps and in “near me” searches. Add photos, hours, services, and a phone number, and collect reviews.
Google Search Console Shows which searches bring people to your website, which pages perform well, and whether Google has trouble reading your site. If you have a website, connect this on day one.
PageSpeed Insights Paste in your website address and get a speed report for mobile and desktop. Slow sites lose visitors, and this tool tells you what to fix.
3. Understand your audience and results
Google Analytics (GA4) Shows how many people visit your site, where they come from, and what they do there. Don’t try to learn every report. Start with traffic sources and top pages.
Looker Studio Turns your data from Analytics, Search Console, and more into clean dashboards. It’s great for sharing simple monthly reports with clients.
4. Create content
Canva The free version covers social media posts, stories, posters, and simple videos. It has plenty of templates, so you can produce good-looking designs without a designer.
CapCut A free video editor for Reels and Shorts. Short videos are one of the best ways for a small business to reach new people, and this makes editing easy on a phone.
5. Manage social media and customers
Meta Business Suite Lets you schedule posts, reply to messages, and see insights for Facebook and Instagram in one place.
WhatsApp Business Very relevant for Kerala, where customers often prefer to message. It offers a business profile, product catalogue, quick replies, and labels for organizing chats.
6. Email marketing
Mailchimp (free plan) or similar tools Email still works. A free plan lets you collect subscribers and send newsletters to a small list. Limits and features change from time to time, so check the current plan before you build around it.
How to get started without feeling overwhelmed
You don’t need all of these at once. If you’re starting from zero, do this:
- Set up your Google Business Profile
- Connect Search Console and Analytics to your website
- Use Canva to create your first week of posts
- Check your numbers once a month, and only the basics: visitors, enquiries, and where they came from
Free tools won’t do the work for you, but they remove the excuse that you can’t afford to start. Pick two or three, use them consistently, and add more as your needs grow.
